Troy Cook - Instructor

Troy Cook has over 25 years of insurance industry experience. Starting out as an independent life agent and becoming an agency supervisor at the age of 24, Troy later transitioned into an employee benefit specialist, where he has spent the last 21 years. Those 21 years began with him as an agent at Group Specialists, Inc in Cedar Rapids. He then served as the manager of the Iowa office for Roger Benefit Group, a sales organization generating over $1 billion of premium annually. In 2002, Troy returned to the agency side of the industry when he joined Krist Insurance Services as manager of the employee benefit and financial services department as well serving as senior account executive. He continued in that role until 2009 when he joined Mercer as Principal, Senior Relationship Manager. In 2014, Troy became Vice President-Sales and Business Development for Telligen, a national population health management company.

Troy has received numerous industry awards including life agency Rookie of the Year and is a 4-time Golden Eagle Leading Producers Round Table member from the National Association of Health Underwriters. He is certified as a Managed HealthCare Professional by HIAA and a Life Underwriter Training Council Fellow. Troy's is past member of the Board of Trustees of the Washington, DC-based National Association of Health Underwriters. He previously served that organization as National Legislative Council Chair. He is a past president and member of the Board of Directors for the Iowa AHU.


Steve Dodder - Instructor

Steve Dodder, CLU, NAHU certified wellness instructor, is a general partner of DocDial.com and the brokerage manager for AITConnects.com. He retired from Assurant Health as the field vice president of sales in 2014. Steve is a twice past president of the Colorado State AHU and is the past NAHU Region VII vice president.


Kyle Hodges - Instructor

Kyle Hodges started in the insurance industry in 1986 and quickly determined the advantages of being self employed and owning an employee benefits agency. In his first membership year, Kyle was NAHU's number-one new member recruiter. Kyle has held many positions with NAHU, including president of West Michigan AHU, Region 2 legislative chair, member of NAHU's Nominations Committee, Region 3 regional vice president and NAHU Distinguished Service Award winner. Kyle sold his benefits agency and began his career in wellness. Kyle's proudest moment with NAHU was being recognized with the Kentucky Colonel Award for his involvement in getting positive healthcare legislation passed in Kentucky during a time of crisis.


Stephen Honig - Reviewer/Instructor

Stephen Honig started his career in employee benefits over 20 years ago, and he currently serves as president of O.C.A. Benefit Services. Through a combination of communication techniques and cutting-edge plan designs utilizing health reimbursement arrangements and health savings accounts, Steve and his team have earned a nationwide reputation for reducing healthcare costs while at the same time improving the quality of the healthcare delivered.


Scott Leavitt - Instructor

Scott Leavitt started in the insurance industry in 1992 and is the president of My Wellchoice+, a wellness company that provides wellness services to employers and TPAs. Scott was the 2008-2009 NAHU president, is a frequent speaker at events across the country and has served in leadership positions for the past 15 years. Scott has been quoted widely on healthcare, insurance and wellness, including The Wall Street Journal, Newsweek, INC Magazine, FOX Business, Kiplingers Personal Finance, Business Week, Benefits Selling, Employee Benefit Advisor, Health Plan Weekly, Life Insurance Selling, National Underwriter, Yahoo Finance, MSN, Money magazine and has appeared on television and National Public Radio.


Susan Rider, MS, ACA, CSFS, CDHC - Instructor

Susan Rider is a consultant in employee benefit and human capital management.

Susan received her Master’s degree in Strategic Leadership (HR) from the University of Indianapolis. Her capstone project was titled, “Human Resources Transformed by Process Efficiency.” Susan obtained her Bachelor’s degree in General Studies with a concentration in Organizational Leadership from IUPUI. Susan holds her Human Resource Certificate.

She serves as an integral extension of the benefits/finance/HR staffs of private and publicly traded businesses.

Susan is a business advisor who brings added value to employers by identifying options to mitigate rising costs, improve the health of employees and their dependents, and represent them in complex negotiations with insurers over how best to design and finance their health and benefit programs and ancillary coverage lines.

Susan is a market innovator who has expertise in alternative coverage mechanisms such as self-insurance options, including captive solutions.

Susan’s certifications include: ACA, Certified Self-Funding Specialist (CSFS), Consumer Directed Health Care (CDHC) & Wellness.

Susan joined Gregory & Appel in 2008. She leads thier compliance committee as well as the human capital management division.


David C. Smith - Lead Author/Reviewer/Instructor

David C. Smith is vice president of Ebenconcepts, one of the Southeast's largest benefits consulting firms. He has nearly 20 years of experience in employee benefits, with regulatory, business and industry perspectives. David has spoken extensively about wellness and its nuances and is always highly rated as a speaker before diverse audiences.
