Meet the Instructors


Len Barend - Instructor

Len Barend, principal and owner of The Barend Agency Inc., has been in the insurance industry since 2003 specializing in Medicare, individual markets and small group. Len serves as current Medicare chair for the Nevada local and state associations. He has also served as past president of CAHU, membership chair, professional development chair and legislative chair. He is a LPRT six-year qualifier and recently termed out as member of the National Senior Medicare Advisory Committee.


Erin Fisher - Instructor

Erin Fisher has been in the healthcare insurance sales field since 1993. She has held management and sales positions with Fortune 50 health insurance companies including Oxford Health Plans, Emblem Health and United Healthcare. Past clients included General Motors, IBM, Marriott, United Nations, American Airlines, Delta Airlines and Federated Department Stores. After assisting an Internet start-up health insurance agency establish a Medicare department, she opened her own business six years ago specializing in Medicare planning for individuals and small groups.

She is a member of the National Association of Health Underwriters (NAHU), the NAHU Connecticut State Board, and the NAHU Medicare Advisory Committee. She is on the new NAHU committee to establish content for a Medicare Certification. Erin is president of the New York City Chapter of Women in Insurance and Financial Services. She is also a Board member of Elder Resources, an organization helping seniors with daily activities and past Board member of Fairfield Network of Executive Women. She is a co-chair for PowerPlay NYC Annual Fund Drive, a non-profit assisting inner city girls develop self-esteem through sports, summer educational programs with the goal of attending college. She is vice president of her condominium association, active in her church and volunteers at the homeless shelter.


Steve Israel - Instructor

Steve Israel specializes in the needs of the senior market as well as those of individuals and families. He has been an active insurance agent for the past 14 years concentrating in Florida. His insurance specialties include life, health, Medicare products, long-term care and disability. Steve is available to speak to local groups and organizations that want to further their understanding of Medicare and the Affordable Care Act.


Kenneth Schmidt - Instructor

Ken, a native of St. Louis, began his insurance career in 1979. He worked as an agent for the Equitable Life Assurance Society of the U.S. for eleven and a half years, serving also as the director of agent sales training his last two years. In 1981 he became a Registered Representative with the National Association of Security Dealers (NASD) and attained his Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU) designation in 1986.

Ken graduated from Maryville University in 1992 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration and in 2012 from New England College with a Master of Arts in Public Policy.

In 2002, he completed his Registered Health Underwriter (RHU) and Registered Employee Benefits Consultant (REBC) designations. Ken worked as an account executive and assistant vice president for Marsh Advantage America with expertise in individual and group life, medical, dental, disability, pension/retirement planning and annuities until June of 2004. Ken is currently a benefits consultant and Medicare specialist with Sonus Benefits by MSMF.

Ken is a long-time member of NAHU and has held various legislative positions on the local, state, regional and national levels for 22 years. He served as the NAHU Legislative Council chair from 2017-2018 and currently serves as the St. Louis Legislative chair. He served as president of the Missouri Association of Health Underwriters (MOAHU) in 2010-2011. He was awarded the NAHU State Legislative Achievement Award in 2005 and 2011 and the NAHU Distinguished Service Award in 2006 and 2012.


Margaret Stedt - Instructor

Margaret “Maggie” Stedt is a certified senior advisor, a member of NAHU’s Leading Producers Round Table and an independent contractor/licensed agent and consultant. Maggie is known for her unique ability to explain complex insurance products such as Medicare Supplements, Medicare Advantage, prescription drug plans, long-term care plans and deferred annuities. Mrs. Stedt has over 40 years of experience in essential areas of the insurance industry.

Maggie currently is president of The Hartley Group Inc. and manages Stedt Insurance Services. The firms specialize in consulting services and sales of insurance products including Medicare HMO, PDP and MediGap, individual life, health and group insurance products.

Maggie is the president of Orange County Health Underwriters, is the NAHU Region 8 membership chair (2014-2017) and serves on the NAHU Medicare Advisory Committee. She is a distinguished toastmaster and certified lay speaker.

She was recently awarded the Distinguished Service Award from NAHU at their 2016 Annual Convention in Albuquerque, New Mexico.


Lynn Tank - Instructor

Lynn Tank is an agency owner who is licensed to sell insurance since 2003 and started at that time with mainly Medicare Supplement plans, Medicare Advantage and PDP plans. By the fall of 2013, 75% of her business was Medicare related with the other 25% being individual coverage. With the advent of the Affordable Care Act and being the only federally facilitated marketplace (FFM) certified agent in her area, her book of business shifted to almost 50/50 between Medicare and FFM plans. Previously, Lynn worked for Guardian Life from 1985 through 1992, starting in the mailroom and worked her way up through premium and billing, claims processor, supervisor assistant and claims supervisor. Lynn entered sales in 2003, started her own agency and currently services a very successful book of business. Lynn truly enjoys helping people with their health insurance options and the Medicare clients are her favorites.
